Hello! My name is Michelle Hughes, and I am the owner and a therapist at SafeCare Counseling Services. I provide individual counseling and psychotherapy services for children, adolescents and adults. I have been married for 30 years, and have seven children, (four of them by adoption). I enjoy spending time with my family, camping, and absolutely love going to the movies. This is my self-care!
I have a master’s degree in social work from Western Michigan University, with a trauma specialty. I fully understand everyone is unique, requiring treatment plans that cater to the specific needs of the individual. I utilize several modalities of therapy, including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT), solution-focused, person-centered, strength-based perspective, and mindfulness.
I work with individuals who are navigating through mental health issues, such as, unresolved trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar and other mood disorders, personality disorders, adjustment disorders, grief and loss, compassion fatigue, and stress management. I have extensive experience working with families who are struggling with postpartum depression (PPD) and other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, as I have worked as an OB social worker within the medical field.
My area of specialty is trauma. I have experience providing therapy for individuals who have experienced all types of abuse, within different stages in life. In addition to professional experience, I also have personal experience of trauma's impact. As a foster and an adoptive parent, I have seen the effects trauma can have on an individual and have encountered the rippling effects it can have on others. As a mother of children who have attachment issues, mental health issues, behavioral issues, cognitive impairments, developmental delays, and autism, I understand the challenges of parenting children with special needs.
It is an honor to be called to this profession. What a privilege to be invited into people’s lives, for the purpose of working towards healing and health. This is a privilege I do not take lightly. Whatever your situation is, I look forward to joining you on your journey towards healing, wholeness and happiness.
